It's day 4 of Sight Word 60.
By this time, most of the 'staches have pretty much mastered the words. So this day allows for small group time with the words which gives a quick informal assessment to see who might need a little more practice. And we get to color. Coloring is fun!
Day 4 is sight word grids.
The grids are 4 x4 grids. Each word is included 4 times in random order. There are 4 grids to a page and a large whole sheet grid. I use the small grids for our coloring and the large grids are great for use on the smart board or for graphing activities!
At the beginning of the year, we do the grids on our smart board in a whole group setting.
Here's how we do our grids:
These are done during our small group/guided reading time. I do the grids with all groups and then I call kids back to read their leveled books one on one in the time we have left!
I call my hippopotamus/center groups to the table. (I would say PINK GROUP come to my table!).
Each child gets a grid. We quickly read through all of the words.
I say " Find....".
They find the word. They spell the word. And read the word again.
Then I say "Color the word .... red."
They find all of that particular word red. (There should be 4 red squares.)
We repeat for each of the 4 words using 4 different colors.
The colors are just chosen randomly! Unless the word is a color word, then we use that color for the color word. So we could "color red red!"!
These colorful grids go home so we can practice the words at home!
And of course, to keep things fun and engaging, we switch out our coloring supplies! Simply changing out the supplies makes this weekly activity more fun and engaging!
I'm including a link to download all of our sight word grids.
These have been created to match our words and our schedule of when we learn the words. (These are not editable but hopefully you find them useful!)
