A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Guided Reading Stop Light!

Wow?!  Is it really only Thursday?!  It really feels like it should be Friday.

My story of the day:  I have been coughing a bit and my little 'stache said:  "Bless you." I said "thank you!" When I coughed again, he said "Mr. Greg you need to take medicines." After telling him I took some medicine, he said, "OK good, you should feel better soon!" I love how caring my 'staches are!

Our centers are rolling along.  We have them all up and going except listening.  That starts next week.  Guided reading is also running smoothly.  The only bump we keep hitting is that the 'staches keep interrupting our guided reading groups.  So, I decided to provide them a visual to help them remember to STOP and WAIT!

I had this lamp in the classroom library.  It was missing the shade because the shade met an untimely death in the Great Classroom Move of 2013.  Did you know those thing crack and crumble?!  True story!

So, with our many trips to Lowe's I always see these colored light bulbs.  This morning I left home early and hit Lowe's at 6:00 a.m. and snagged one of these red bulbs for $4.  I screwed it in the lamp and plugged it in!  BAM!  Instant stop light!

I placed our red carpet circle at the point where I want them to stop and wait.  The lamp sits on my table.  When the red light is on, Mr. Greg cannot be interrupted (except for blood and vomit and broken bones!).

After a brief discussion of our new stop light we embarked on centers.  And BAM!  It worked so well!  We had maybe 1 or 2 interruptions.  The red light was the perfect visual reminder!

Students need visual reminders and this was the perfect and cheap and easy reminder to solve one of our classroom problems!  YAY FOR SUCCESS!

And now...it's time for the final...and I must say...most exciting give away of my two week Greg-tacular Birthday Glitter-nanza!

Two years ago I was at my wit's end with the pencil sharpener.  Electric ones only sharpened one side of the pencil...and that was if they pencils were good quality.  Never mind that annoying, obnoxious teeth grinding sound.    And the cost.  FAIL!  So I went old school and ordered a silver hand crank pencil sharpener with various size holes for all of our pencil needs.  The first week was stellar.  Then, well...I developed blisters on my fingers...I worked up a sweat every morning...and busted my knuckles 5,678 times.  Another EPIC sharper fail.    Then it happened.

I saw a blog post for the "world's quietest pencil sharpener" and was intrigued.  Then I read some other reviews of this MIRACLE device.  I was sold.  I was desperate.  I was on the verge of flinging myself out of my ground level classroom window rather than sharpening 1 more pencil.  Desperate...

So, I ordered this little miracle.  It arrived.  I unpacked and went to sharpening.  And guess what?!  FAIL!  I was so let down.  Then I read the directions and realized I was doing it wrong!  Imagine that...a man not reading directions!

Round 2.  I followed the directions and OMG...there it was.  The perfectly sharpened pencil.  No blisters.  No sweat.  No desire to jump out of that ground floor window.  Then I sharpened two pencils.  And three.  And a dozen and two dozen.  And guess what?!  I wasn't tired...or sweaty...and I did it all one handed.  And it was....wait for it....QUIET!  And PERFECT points every time.  Even with the cheap dollar store pencils...this thing is simply AMAZING!

I have used this amazing green pencil sharpener for two years.  I tell everyone to buy the thing.  I didn't think life with a pencil sharpener could get any better.  And then it happened.

WAIT FOR IT..............................
