A Kindergarten Smorgasboard: Submissions For Smorgie!

It's BACK!  It's time for more Submissions For Smorgie!  I have so missed making my quirky little videos and answering all of your questions!  I love this!  Seriously, it's so much fun for me!!!  I really hope it helps you and gives you some ideas you can use!

If you have a question you would like to see answered in a video, just click on the Submissions For Smorgie graphic and send me a question!

Today's questions come from Melissa who teaches ELL student in Iowa!  She is also the talented friend who created my lesson plan template!  (I have gotten TONS  of questions about this topic so hope this answers those!)

At the beginning of the year, I annoucned a bold, glittery experiment in my classroom.  One that could have have gone really well or blown up in a big sparkly disaster.  I decided to go with no desks and tables.

Well, I am happy to report (GLITTER!)  that our experiment has worked better than I imagined!  The kids love it...parents love it....administration loves it!

So, here's a video about all the details of our no desks/tables!

Check out the video here on my YouTube Channel!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Glittery Fairy Tale Science!

Happy Friday!

It's the first official Mad Science Friday in Kindergarten Smorgasboard Land!  This week we decied to tie in our fairy tales, our love of glitter and making a mess into a science experiment.  We found this idea at Fun A Day!

You will need:
Baking Soda, Jello (we used raspberry and blueberry for pink and blue as in prince and princesses!), water, clear dishwashing soap, vinegar, ice cube trays, and squirt bottles.

To make your frozen prince and princess, mix 3 cups of baking soda with 1 packet of Jello and a cup of water.  It smells sooooo good!

Mix completely.  Then (my favorite part) add all the glitter you want.  Nope...not enough...keep going!  There's never too much GLITTER!

Next, fill your ice trays with the mixture.  You can get cheap ice trays at the Dollar Tree.  Get the cheap ones because you will want to throw them away!  TRUST ME!

Place in the freezer and freeze overnight!

Fill your bottles with vinegar.  The directions called for some clear dish soap so we used that too but I don't think it will matter...with or without dish soap!

Do this outside.  TRUST ME. And...um...yeah....make sure you take towels/wipes and trash bags when you go outside.  Again, TRUST ME.

Empty the cubes onto plates/cups/bowls/the ground.  Give students the bottles and let them squirt!

We actually talked about the ingredients and made predictions.  Then we screamed and squealed and squirted!

EPIC FRIDAY FUN!

I love this because it's fairy simple. It's very enggaging.  And using different colors of Jello means could use it with any theme or topic!

ADD LOTS OF GLITTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  MORE GLITTER!!

Did I mention it's messy?  And you know my motto:  messy=successful!  I would call this a huge success!

Listen to the fun!  (And notice my socks....just sayin...)

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard CLASSROOM REVEAL!

August 1st has arrived.  I know I've been teasing you for 2 weeks...and judging my Facebook and Instagram feeds...ya'll wanna see something.  Well, I am SUPER Excited to show off my new rainbow mustache classroom!!!!!!!!!!!

I am LOVING my room this year.  Colors EVERYWHERE!  Mustaches EVERYWHERE.  AND TONS OF SPACE!

You've heard me teasing an experiment that I am embarking on this year.  Here it is:  (Ya'll might want to sit down for this...which is ironic....)

NO TABLES!  NO DESKS!  NO CHAIRS!  NO ASSIGNED SEATS!  People, we're going a little montessori up on here!  I was inspired by my dear friend Erin at Kleinspiration.  If you do some research, this type of no seating arrangement is great for creativity (hello, have you met me, I am all about creativity) and collaboration!

TRUTH!  OK...the no table thing is not totally true.  I have 2 round tables and my small group table.   In all honesty, there are enough seats at a table for everyone (FI WE NEED THEM!).  Here's the plan:

CHOICE!  CHOICE!  CHOICE.  I get asked all the time about keeping students engaged.  Well here are two tricks that work wonders:  NOVELTY AND CHOICE!  So why not give them novelty and choice in where they sit and work???

That's right.  They can sit on the floor.  They can sit at a table.  They can stand.  They can choose a rug and sit on it.  The choice is theirs.  The novelty is that each time they work they sit somewhere different.  When we have those times where everyone needs to be working in their own space, I bought 15 bath mats so each student can have a mat to use for their own space!

People, I am super excited about this.  I am a little nervous.  But here's my thing:  I love being a little innovative and trying new things.  It's all about procedures, procedures, procedures and expectations.  WE CAN DO THIS!

(Plan B:  I have tables in storage should my experiment blow up in my face!)

I will be blogging about this and sharing how it goes over the next few weeks!  Wanna take bets?!  Success??  Epic fail???

So, are ya ready to see the classroom??

This is what it might look like when the 'staches have their rugs out working around the room!

How much do you love that lamp?!

This is what it looks like if we are using the rugs for whole group work.  Can I just say I love how they look when they're all together!!!

I love my mustace clipboard from CJayne Teach!  I love my milk crate pointer storage!

You can see the famous center wheel!  It's in a new, more 'stache friendly location this year. 'Stache friendly=less Mr. Greg stress!

Our mini pocket charts are stored in this metal planter I found at the Dollar Tree!

Upper left corner:  CLEAR POCKET CHART!  TRUE STORY!  I'll give ya a moment...

That board is for anchor charts and activities using pocket charts.  The chart is on a curtain rod that's held up by command hooks.  The chart is attached to the rod using curtain hooks.  If I need to display anchor charts, I just unclip the chart and put up an anchor chart!

Red pocket chart:  our student friendly I CAN Statement CANS!  I know right... I can  on CANS!

Colors and shapes!  Folders!  Months and days!

Classroom library!  Thanks to Creative Teaching Press for the rainbow chevrons and mustache photo booth kid!  I love the library!  It's fun.  It's inviting.  It's cozy.  It's colorful.  It has giant fish hats to wear while reading.  What 'stache wouldn't want to read in the plastic pool with a giant fish hat on their head?!

Community supplies.  We use community supplies to foster a sense of sharing and to reinforce the idea that this is OUR CLASSROOM.  This is not Mr. Greg's classroom.  This is our classroom.  These are our things.  This sense of ownership really helps the 'staches respect our materials and property!

Rainbow Mustache Land needs a rainbow entrance!  Anyone see the mistake?!  I will write each 'staches name on a mustache next week!

The rainbow curtain is PLASTIC and was one of our finds on our last minute IKEA trip.  It makes a perfect entrance to our land of 'staches and color.

And everyone needs a TBFF posing in their doorway.  I expect this everyday TBFF!

Small group area.  Mr. Greg's name is on the wall.  In case I forget who I am.  Which happens.

Mustache drawers for weekly work.  Laminated circles for small group work.  Thanks CTP!

People.  This is one of those finds that well, just defies all words.

People.  IT IS A GIANT ZIPPER RUG.  GIANT ZIPPER.  The giant zipper rug leads into our bathroom.  I KNOW RIGHT!  Zipper...bathroom.   Too much.

Here's the best part of the giant zipper rug.  IKEA.  $5.  FIVE DOLLARS.  So I had to buy 6.  I have two in my room AND I gifted each of my teammates with a zipper rug.

I was like Oprah giving our zipper rugs!  YOU GET A ZIPPER RUG!  YOU GET A ZIPPER RUG!  EVERYBODY GETS A ZIPPER RUG!

Another Ikea find.  These baskets are PERFECT for folders and paper!  This one is hanging by our mailboxes.  I plan to use it contain all of those signed notes and papers that get pulled out of folders and backpacks.  Maybe this year I won't lose so many important papers.  ALLEGEDLY.  I'm not saying I lost papers.   ALLEGEDLY.  I'm just saying this will help!

I made rainbow clipboards (if we're gonna be working on the floor, we need clipboards to match our classroom....just sayin!) and use a $3 laundry basket to store them.

Our rainbow word wall.  I am super excited to use our new RAINBOW MUSTACHE SENTENCE STRIP sight word cards on our wall!  It's a magnetic whiteboard so we can just use magnets to display our words.

Our classroom!

And now a guided tour of the classroom.

That's it.  Our 2014-2105 rainbow mustache classroom and no tables/assigned seats/sit anywhere experiment!

Now...did you hear???  It's a Back To School Sale!  Who doesn't love a sale?!

Click the picture to visit my store!

It's time for the TPT Back To School Sale!  People, I am so excited.  My cart is already FULL!

Happy Sunday!   It's week 5 of Schedulin Sunday!  I've got my Big Red on ice, my printer is humming away.  The glitter is open.  I'm in my pajamas and still haven't showered.  It must my Schedulin Sunday!

This week we wrap up our fairy tale study and move onto fables.  We also continue working on numbers to 20, counting to 20 and teen numbers.  We will pause on Thursday to remember Septemeber 11th with two simple patriotic projects.

Tuesday we are also leaving the confines of the school for our very first field trip.  We are walking across the street to the state fair!   TRUTH!  Our school sits directly across the street from the fair grounds so we get to visit the fair for free each year.  We do not ride rides but we visit the animals, check out some exhibits, watch pig races and more!  It's super fun and it means Mr. Greg gets fair food for lunch!  YUMM-O!

As always, you can download my lesson plans for the week by clicking the picture!

T-television hat (ties, tie dye, tiaras and tutus)
U-upside down umbrella
V-Volcano
W-wig
X-x-ray

Yes, people, on Tuesday we are wearing ties, tie dye, tiaras and tutus.  Nuff said.

Here are stories for the week:

We will read Jack and The Beantalk to finish up our fairy tale unit.  We will complete our fairy tale comparison chart and then we will vote for our favorite fairy tale.

Wednesday we will start reading fables.  We will read The Tortoise And The Hare, The Lion And The Mouse and The Little Red Hen.  We will complete a fable comparison chart featuring characters, setting, and lesson learned.

We will also build a fables anchor chart!

We will also vote for our favorite fable and complete some simple and fun fable art projects!

Here is a freebie with labels for a Fables anchor chart!

In math, we are working on numbers to 20, counting to 20 and teen numbers!

This week will be more small groups.  More ten frames.  More counting.  And a fun At The Fair Grab and Count game that I'm working on!  (Stay tuned!)

I am working a lot with my 'staches in small groups so we can build a strong foundation with numbers to 20 before we introduce some other skills!

We will be using activities from my 1-20 A Number Odyssey creation!

We will also pause on Thursday to remember September 11th.  I do not tell my students what happened because I feel that's a parent's place.   But we do honor America that day with two simple but patriotic art projects!

We do live in Music City USA so we have to honor our country with a guitar!

And who doesn't love a handprint painting!  I love how awesome these handprint flags turn out!

Click the picture to get your free patten for the patriotic guitar!

For Foodie Fun Friday we will make Scarecrow Crunch!

And for Mad Science Friday we are making galaxy slime!  And I get to wear my Mad Science costume for the first time!  SO EXCITING!

For the galaxy slime recipe, check out Two-Daloo!

Here is a free emergent reader that I wrote for this week!  Since we're going to the fair I thought a fun fair emergent reader was a good idea!

And since we are going to the fair, what better way to include some five senses fun into our week than using our five senses at the fair!  We will make a chart of our five senses and list all of the things from the fair that we touched, heard, smelled, tasted and saw!

Click the picture to download your free five senses chart labels!

Howdy folks!  Have ya missed me?!  It's rare that I don't post every day...let alone for 2 days...I almost had a withdrawal!   But I'm back now and it's time for another Submission For Smorgie video!

This is a super fun question from Kit, a kindergarten teacher in Snellville!  Thanks for the awesome question Kit!

You can watch the video here or head over to my YouTube channel!

So, what non educational items do you use in your classroom to engage students or make learning more fun and crazy?  Leave a comment below.  I will compile all of the answers into a list and share it with ya'll so we have a great resource to turn to!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Mad Science Friday: Galaxy Slime!

People, you know how much I love hands-on, engaging, science experiments with my 'staches.  Ya'll also know how much I love making messes and you know I love glitter....so this Mad Science Experiment is beyond epic for my 'staches!

You will need:
Stay-Flo Liquid Starch (laundry detergent aisle at Wal-Mart)
Glue (clear glue works better but I couldn't find any)
watercolors  (We actually have glitter watercolors so we used those!  Yeah, big surprise we have glitter watercolors, right?!)
fine glitter

Step 1:  pour 1 entire bottle of glue into a bowl!

Step 2:  add some drops of watercolor (and glitter)

Step 3:  mix completely.  Add watercolor until you reach the desired color.

Step4: SLOWLY add the starch.  Don't add all the starch at once.  Continue slowly adding starch until your slime is the consistency you want.

Then, GET MESSY!

AND yes people, I broke out the Mad Scientist costume!

This class is so much fun that I'm stepping up my game with costumes!

What other costumes should I bust out?!

It's time again for some Schedulin Sunday goodness from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard!  This week we will be knee deep in the muddy fields of the farm!  It's FARM WEEK!!!

As always, grab a copy of my lesson plans by clicking on the picture!  The template is not my creation but it is available at A Teacher's Plan.

This week we also wrap up our ABC BOOTCAMP!

Y-Yak
Z-Zipper

We celebrate the end of bootcamp with an ABC Fashion show on Wednesday!  Each child received a paper bag vest with a letter attached.  They must decorate their vest with pictures for their letter.  Wednesday we will walk to runway sporting our abc fashions!  We're also dressing in camouflage and each child receives dog tags for completing bootcamp!

Our stories for this week are:

After we read each story, we will be completing anchor charts.  We are doing tree maps for farmers (can, have, are), have you been to a farm?,  and a KWL for farms.

We will be reviewing all letters and sounds this week.  Based on our data, I will go back and focus on letters that the majority of us need hep with.  I will be pulling in some beginning sound picture sorts to reinforce the letters and sounds.

We are also working on syllables and rhyming words!

In writing, we are continuing our focus on telling a story.  We are working on good illustrations and great sentences!

We will be using describing words to write a poem about Mud!

This idea is inspired by the Welcome To Room 306 blog!

We will make this super adorbs Mis Wishy Washy craft!  I love this because we get to paint and that means we get messy!  Messy=successful!!!!!!!!!

This comes from Making Learning Fun.

We will also be making these super easy and super cute...I mean for serious, how cute are these guys....animal windsocks!

These are from Buggy and Buddy!

We will also use our Draw, Write Now Books to practice our listening and following directions skills!

I love these books becuase they are great for listening and following direction.  They are easy enough for our 'staches to be successful.  They have a non-fiction handwriting component.  People, they really are fabulous!  Click on the first picture to get your set!

Now, with ABC BOOTCAMP ending, I might go into hat withdrawls.  I know...I know...we can't make a hat every day of the year....but I really like the hats.  And so do my 'staches.  So... maybe...just maybe...we will make some animal hats!

Maybe!

In math, we're doing more numbers and counting to 20.  We will spend a lot of time in small groups so that I can differentiate my instruction and target my 'staches who are still not quite there with counting!

We will do stack and count....we will count pennies on piggies...we will make ten frames...we will match sets to numbers...we will subitize...we will count the mud on pigs and write the number...and lots of practice in centers!

Here is a fun math freebie for ya!

Here is a stack and count freebie:

If you are like me and in need of some activities for whole group and small group counitng, I whipped this new mini creation up this morning!  It has tons of activities for counting to 20 all designed for whole group and small group!  And it includes a fun science experiment!

We will also do a fun food sort!  We will discuss where our food comes from and sort pictures of the food to the correct animal!

Click to get your freebie!

For Mad Science Friday we will make our own butter and see which foods disolve in water!

For Foodie Fun Friday we will be making Butterscotch Haystacks!

You can also make them with chocolate or peanut butter...YUMO!

AND FRIDAY IS DRESS LIKE A FARMER!  I HAVE THE MOST EPIC OVERALLS EVER!  I AM SO READY!!!!!!

And that folks, is our week!!!

The resources for this week are available in the following creations:

A Kindergarten Smogasboard of Hopes And Dreams

$

Happy Monday!  Remember the time that the weather said it wasn't going to rain for days and days and days...and Mr. Greg took the doors and top of his Jeep (affectionately known as Smorgie1) and then it rained?!  I made it home in less than 15 minutes (normal trip is 30...) and guess what?!?!  No rain!!!!

One of my favorite activities to do during the beginning of the school year is to write our hopes and dreams for kindergarten.  It's so much fun to see what my 'staches want to learn in kindergarten.  I also love that we use this as a way to connect with our families.  We involve our families in our goal writing for kindergarten.    This is such a huge hit with my families each year.  This year, many parents wrote sweet notes thanking me for taking the time to ask and involve them in this great activity!

We kick off our hopes and dreams by reading the book Big Plans!

I love love love this book.  It's a  must have for every classroom.  After we read the book we talk about how we have BIG PLANS for kindergarten.  I share my big plans for us to become readers and writers and mathematicians and scientists and friends.  Then we brainstorm all our hopes and dreams (big plans) for kindergarten.

The students share their all the things they want to learn in kindergarten.  As they share, I record their answers on our circle map.

As they share, I write down everything they hope to learn.  I don't censor their dreams.  And you never when their hopes and dreams might spur a fun new lesson or unit!

The next day, we re-read the book Big Plans and we talk about the most important thing we want to learn in kindergarten!

We turn our 1 big hope or goal in to a sentence using a predictable chart.

As we are working on these activities in class, I send home a note to the families asking them to share their hopes and dreams for their child in kindergarten.

(click the letter for your freebie)

I then take the hopes and dreams of the students and their families and create a puzzle that displays all of our hopes and dreams for kindergarten!

I LOVE how our display turned out this year!!!!  It's so bright and colorful just like our class!  The puzzle speaks volumes to the fact that there are many pieces that make our class successful and we need every piece to work!

Now, what happens to students whose parents don't send back their hopes and dreams papers?  Simple.  Mr. Greg writes his hopes and dreams for that child.  That means every child has their hopes and dreams and they have a grownup sharing hopes and dreams for the year!

Reading the hopes and dreams of the families can be an eye opening, tug at your heart strings experiene.  I've found that my perception of my studetns changes when I read these hopes and dreams.  It really does me inspire me to work harder and be the best teacher I can possibly be!

I love this project so much!  It makes that connection between school and home concrete and visible.  We leave the display up all year and at the end of the year we talk about our hopes and dreams and whether we achieved those this year!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Morning Meeting Greeting Idea!

Here's my resolution for this school year as it relates to blogging and videos...I will learn where to place the camera so I don't cut off my head.  For reals....I guess it's more about the kids and let's be honest...who wants to see me?!

And I'm hoping for a new camera or some Amazon gift cards so I can get myself a camera (my birthday is MONDAY!!!!) so I can do high-def videos!  But for now, we'll take what we can get!

Today's classroom video is a fun and quick morning meeting greeting!  This one is great for beginning of the year because it focuses on names!

It goes like this:  Say your name and when you do, we will say it back to you!  Then one child says their name and the rest of the class shouts it back!  SUPER FUN!  SUPER QUICK!

(You also get to see how we start our day...you see me start the clean up song and see the staches moving to the carpet for morning meeting!  This was a 14 minute video of our morning meeting.  I cut it down to just the greeting...if you want to see the whole video, let me know!)

You can view the video here or on my YouTube channel!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard ABC BOOTCAMP FASHION SHOW!

We did it!!  We survived ABC BOOTCAMP!  And we're now letter superstars!  So how do superstars celebrate?  With a fashion show of course!

Yes people, we had an ABC Fashion Show in kindergarten and it was epic fun!

We sent home a paper bag vest with each child.  Each bag was labeled with a letter.  It just so happens that we have 4 kindergarten classes with a total of 52 students.  That meant 2 complete sets of ABC vests!

The 'staches worked with their families to find pictures that started with their letter.  They returned the vests to school so we could walk the runway.  I loved the creativity in each vest and loved to hear the positive comments from parents and kids about the project!

While I loved all of the vests, this one won the most creative award.  They took a picture of this little stache passed out in the car after school (Mr. Greg is EXHAUSTING people...), in his ocotopus hat n less and included it on his Z vest for ZZZZZZZs!  How stinking awesome?!

During the fashion show, the staches walked the runway.  And let me just say, RuPaul would be proud.  These little 'staches WORKED!!!!  And some of my most reserved staches had the most attitude on the runway.  People, it was epic!!!!

Each stache recieved a camouflage dog tag and certificate and a helmet!  The helmets came from the Dollar Tree!    We also dressed in camouflage for the day!

And of course, I had to get all dressed up!

I've had a ton of questions about the effectiveness of ABC BOOTCAMP!  Well, the data speaks for itself.  Today, we did a letter/sound assessment for all of the letters.  Not only did we show tremendous growth, but 11/12 scored 93% or higher!  The errors I saw were g/j errors, y/u/w errors which we will focus on in small groups!

This picture shows the growth (this was actually a week ago....) but you can see how much growth we've made!

For more on ABC BOOTCAMP, you can read my post on the details of BOOTCAMP by clicking the picture!

And I have to share my two newest creations!

My newest black line only creation!  It's all about the leaves!

And it's included in my new FALL BUNDLE!  The fall bundle is a 25% savings over purchasing the creations separately.  300 pages of fall math and literacy centers and activities!

Howdy!  It's me...Mr. Greg... from the Kindergarten Smorgasboard!  And it's time for Schedulin' Sunday!  (PS  I spent the weekend in Indiana celebrating my hometown's 200th birthday...so I'm beat...so...yeah...this might not be the best post ever...but I had to say hi to the best followers and readers and friends EVER!  And share some ideas...and freebies!)

This week we continue our celebration of all things fall by learning all pumpkins!!!

It's pumpkins for everyone.  YOU GET A PUMPKIN!  YOU GET A PUMPKIN!  EVERYBODY GETS A PUMPKIN!  Ok...that was my Oprah moment for the day...

We learn all about the life cycle of a pumpkin...the parts of pumpkins...we measure ourselves with pumpkins...we do science experiments on pumpkins....we will make pumpkin pie and dissolve pumpkin candy.  We will make noodle pumpkins and finger print pumpkins...people, it's all things pumpkin!

Pumpkin Measuring!  We predict how tall we are and then measure!  We record our answers on our class chart.  Mr. Greg snaps our picture (with his very fancy, very complicated new Rebel T3i camera!) and we make a class book!

We make noodles out of pasta wheels!  I have a YouTube video on making colored pasta!  Click the picture to see the video!

KWL Charts...Brace Maps...Pumpkin writing and reading!

We will explore pumpkins using our 5 senses.  We will vote on SHORT OR TALL PUMPKINS!  We will see if pumpkins sink or float!

We are also working on adding this week so we will be solving equations by drawing pictures (pumpkins!).

Mad Science Friday will be dissolving candy corn and the candy corn pumpkins using water, oil and vinegar!

Foodie Fun Friday will be pumpkin pies!  We will use vanilla pudding, pumpkin pie filling and mini pie shells to make our pumpkin pies!

Who wants some freebies?!?!

All of our pumpkin activities come from my Great Pumpkin creation!

We will also be using these resources:

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard of Fall Ideas

Happy Fall Ya'll!  The 'staches have been hard at work over the last couple of weeks and we've been enjoying the beautiful fall weather!  Now, we live in Music City so it is fall like for a few days and then BAM!  It's hot again.  It's hard to be in the fall mood when it's fall...summer...fall...summer...come on, Mother Nature...make up your mind!

PS  It's hard to do fun leaf activities when the leaves are still green...just saying!

But I digress....I wanted to share some fun and simple fall activities with ya!  Hope ya find something you can use!

Who doesn't love Mrs. Wishy Washy?!  We read some Mrs. Wishy Washy books when we did our farm week and we made these adorable Mrs. Wishy Washy paper plate projects!   So.  CUTE.

We painted the plate peach.

Fold a large paper plate in half and draw an arc.  Students cut the line.  The two pieces become her bonnet.  Do the same with a small paper plate.  This becomes the bonnet's top pieces.  We colored those red.  The 'staches drew a face and BAM!  Mrs. Wishy Washy!

Mrs. Wishy Washy was a PERFECT compliment to our mud poem!

We made a mud word web.  We came up with describing words for mud and then used those words to write a short poem.  We decorated the poem with "muddy" handprints!

Since we don't have any pretty fall leaves, we painted some beautiful fall leaves.

This project is super easy and fun...and can be...wait for it...MESSY!  Ya know how I love to get messy!

We simply folded a large pice of white construction paper in half vertically (the hot dog as we call it) and I squirted brown, red, yellow and orange paint in the middle.  The 'staches closed the paper and started rubbing.  We opened the paper and had a beautiful tree!  We added details to our paintings to create amazing fall masterpieces.

This is one of my favorites of all time!  I took pictures of the 'staches pretending to blow and then we colored (again...no pretty leaves here yet...GRR) leaves.  We cut them out and pretended to blow them!  HOW.  CUTE.  IS.  THIS.

Last week we had a blast with scarecrows!!!

We read the cutest book:  The Little Scarecrow Boy.  In the book he makes six "fierce" faces trying to scare the birds.  After we read the book, we graphed if we like scarecrows.  Then we made these adorable scarecrows.  I love the different versions and faces!

The scarecrows are a directed project.  I gave the students the paper and directed them what to do.  They did all of the work (no patterns or lines) and created these amazing pieces of art!

And yes...there is a pirate scarecrow!

And we made these awesome scarecrow snacks!

We mixed refried beans, sour cream and salsa together.  We spread it over a tortilla.  We used tortilla chips to make the hat and cheese for hay!

The 'staches ATE IT UP!  DELICIOUS.  And Cute!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Of Male Kindergarten Teachers

OK, unless you haven't noticed...I'm different from most kindergarten teachers.  Really.  It's true.  A majority of the kindergarten teachers are....wait for it....women.  It's true.  I'm not a woman.  Again, it's so true.    I am a member of a very elite group of male kindergarten teachers.  People, it's true.  We are few and far between, but we're out there.  We are the male kindergarten teachers of the world!

I LOVE being a kindergarten teacher and bringing a male perspective to my classroom and the teaching world.  And a sad fact is that so many of our students do not have a male presence in their life so I am honored and fortunate to be able to fill that void in some small small way!  I definitely feel a sense of calling and obligation to be the best teacher and role model that I can possibly be for my students because I am a dude.  I almost (honestly) feel the need to work harder and prove myself more each and every day.

Like I said, this is a very elite group and I've met some awesome male kindergarten teachers.  I love finding other guys teaching kindergarten so we can share our experiences.  DUDES WHERE ARE YOU!!!????

One of the friends I've made is everyone's favorite YouTube star:  Pete Harry from Harry's Kindergarten.  People, this guy is phenomenal.

And get this:  he works with 6 teachers on his team and HALF of them are dudes.  Yeah.  6 teachers.  3 of them dudes.  AND his brother is also a Kindergarten teacher (Pete teaches in a rural setting and his brother teaches in an urban setting just like me!)  !!!  Isn't that awesome?!?!?!   MALE KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS UNITE!!!!!

Pete and his brother

I attended one of Pete's sessions at the I Teach K conference this summer and walked away with so many awesome ideas and ways to use his music in my classroom.    Right now, some of our favorite "Harry Kindergarten" songs are Letter Rap, Superhero Counting, and Counting to 20.    We love to rock out to Harry Kindergarten  and his music.  I even compiled a little music video of our class getting down to Harry Kindergarten.  Here's the best part:  we're moving and dancing but we're also LEARNING!  Learning and fun?!  And dancing!? That's a perfect combination!

Another awesome male kindergarten teacher who uses music and shares his talents with others is Dan Colquhoun of Dan The Rocking Teaching Man!  Dan is from Sydney Australia!!  I met Dan in Vegas this summer and he's an awesome guy!  I love his songs and videos on YouTube as much as my 'staches do!

Dan and Harry

Now, who would like to win some Harry Kindergarten music?    You can win 3 of Harry's videos or 6 audio downloads!  Who doesn't want that?!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Classroom Video: Morning Arrival

Today was a chug the Pepto kind of day.  No really.  On my planning time I drove to Wal-Mart and bought the large size and chugged.  I felt better afterwards.

Now onto something much more fun....a classroom video.  And for the first time ever...WE'RE IN HIGH DEFINITION!!!!!!!!!!!  Yep.  I invested in a new Canon Rebel T3i so I could do better videos...get ready to see Mr. Greg and the 'staches in high def!  (You've been warned!)

I get asked a lot about my classroom management and really, a lot of the success I have comes from procedures and routines.  And tons of practice!!!   BUT I have to admit that I think a huge part of the success is our morning arrival procedures.  Why is this key?  Because it sets the tone for the day and it's designed so everyone can be successful and start off on a great note.  It's also designed to be teacher free!  The 'staches know what to do and our trained to do it.  It's exactly the same everyday so I don't have to take any time to explain anything!

So what's this awesome, glitter-ific routine:  It's simple really.

1.  Greet the teacher with a hug, handshake or high five.  I take their folder, check their homework, put in new homework and put the folder away.
2.  Move your picture.  We use our Promothean to take attendance.  We slide our picture from home to school to show that we're at school.
3.  Journals-each student has a morning journal.  They write their name, the date and a picture.  As the year progresses we add in words and sentences.  In order to have a journal a student must earn it be being able to write their name.  If they haven't earned their journal, their morning work is tracing the name and writing their name.
4.  Put journal away and read!

You can read a more detailed post on my morning work HERE!

And yes, we rock out in the morning.  No classical music for us.  I read that classical music in the morning puts kids to sleep so we kick it up with some fun dance music!!!

Check out the video to see how our morning looks!  You can view it here or on my YouTube Channel!

People, one more day until we get a week off for fall break!!!  WOOHOO!

Of course, that means it's the end of our first 9 weeks grading period so it's report card assessment time.  I. DESPISE. THIS.  Usually.  But now that I use ESGI, I can knock my assessments out in a day!!!!!  But while I'm busy assessing (and seeing amazing growth!) my 'staches are hard at work in centers.  Can I just say I love centers?!  They're so fun and engaging...differentiated...and the choice means the 'staches are doing things that interest them and the things are helping them learn!  YEAH!!!  GO CENTERS!   GO CENTERS!   GO CENTERS!!!

So, here is a peek at some of our center time this week!
