A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Classroom Video: Informational Text Whole Group Reading Lesson

$

It's time for another classroom video!  This is a request (if you have a request for a video, click the Submissions For Smorgie button on the right and send in your request.  Your wish is my command!)

This is a whole group lesson using informational text to kick off our weather research unit.  You'll see us start off with schema and you'll hear a read aloud.  I try to make the read alouds as interactive as possible so you see lots of discussions and questions as we read.    This is a typical whole group lesson for my class.  If it's a fictional story we would do a story map or work on comprehension strategies, but the interactive part is still there.

Let me know what you think or if you have questions!

You can see the video here or on my YouTube channel!

Hello people!!!  Happy Monday.

You know I love my glitter.  If it can be glittered, I'm all for it.  I would probably glitter myself if I could.....hmmmm now my brain is working...and turning...Imagine one of my fun teaching outfits being ME covered in glitter.  Can you handle glittery Greg?!?!  OMG!

So...you also know I incorporated a sensory bin into our classroom this year.  And yes, it's differentiated and yes it is academic and yes the 'staches love it.  See...Common Core and FUN all in one!!    So I'm always looking for fun things to put in the sensory bin.

Since this week is St. Patrick's Day, why not sparkly, metallic beans?!?!

BAM!
Here's what you need:
white beans (I used little beans and big beans)
ziploc bag
plates
metallic watercolor paint
I found my watercolors at Amazon for about $8 a bottle.
(Click on the pictures to get your paint at Amazon!)

Here's how to make sparkly metallic beans!  SPARKLY PEOPLE!  SPARKLY BEANS!!!!
Put some beans into your ziploc bag.

Add paint.  I just squirted  paint all around the beans.  You can add more after your shake the beans.
Close the bag.  You don't want to paint yourself...or you might...and if you do...YAY YOU!

Shake the beans.

SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE THE BEANS!
Once the beans are coated, pour the beans onto a plate to dry.

THAT'S IT!

After they dry (about an hour)...pour the beans into your sensory bin!  BAM!

I used the CVC and CVC-E words from my St. Patrick's Day blackline creation to differentiate the sensory bin hippopotamus (hippos..cuz we can't call them centers anymore...TRUE STORY!).

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Classroom Video: HIT THE FLOOR!

It's time for another classroom video!

Today's video is another fun, movement filled morning meeting greeting!!  This greeting is called hit the floor!

Each student is greeted by the class using the cheer and then they hit the floor!  When they hit the floor they can dance or work the runway!

I have some music playing in the background to give them some inspiration!

We did this greeting for about two weeks.  At first, several of my friends were hesitant to hit the floor, but as the days went on, they got much more comfortable and joined in the fun!    I love that you can see them coming out of their comfort zone but you still see some that are a bit hesitant!  It's such a great way to see their personalities!!!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard of Favorite Guided Reading Supplies

$

1 more day until spring break.  We. Can. Make.  It.

Today I want to share my favorite guided reading supplies!   I'm not the most organized teacher in the world.  True story.  I start out with great intentions and then kindergarten happens...and I am defeated by the unorganization monster!

But...baby steps....right?!?!   So I started with my guided reading/small group supplies since that's where we spend the most time.

I have a basket on my guided reading table that contains all of the supplies we need for our lessons.  The books are kept in a drawer next to the table.

So what do we use for guided reading?!  Well here ya go...

Reading fingers!  We use different reading fingers to help us point to the words and keep us engaged!  (During my final evaluation of this year my principal even got excited about the reading fingers being used!)

I allow the students to choose their own fingers....choice=empowerment=engagement!

I found these finger lights on Amazon and they are a huge hit!  I love how they light up each word as we read!  The light really helps us focus on the words!

I found my lights on Amazon.  I got 80 lights for $10!   (You can never have too many finger lights...trust me!)

We also have these awesome/creepy (it's a fine line!) fingers that I found at Dollar General at Halloween!

We do a lot of word work and sentence writing during our guided reading time so we need lots of dry erase tools for our writing!

We use these awesome dry erase paddles!  My mommy got these for me as a kindergarten gift years ago.  I use them for everything.  Whole group...small group...one on one...they're so fun and the 'staches LOVE THEM!

We use these for word work and writing sight words!

Click the picture to see the paddles on Amazon!

We also love these laminated circles.  I ordered the circles from Creative Teaching Press.  Laminated them.  BAM!  Colorful dry erase circles!  These are great for our sentence writing and word work!

Now, with all of this dry erase work, we need erasers.

Our solution????

SOCKS!  YES!  SOCKS!!!   I send home a note at the beginning of each year asking for old socks.  Then I wash them.  A lot.

These make perfect erasers for dry erase work!!  And they're free.  And we have plenty of them.  Trust me, plenty.

Of course we need some writing supplies, so besides pencils, we use highlighters to highlight words in our take home books.

These are Scentos highlighters.  So of course, we have to sniff them.

We also use these fun Scentos pens for our writing.  The 'staches (and let's be honest...Mr. Greg) loves all of the colors.  And we love smelling these too...

We keep copies of our letter sound  chart handy so we can refer to it as we work.

click the picture to get your freebie!

And of course, we need rewards for all of our hard work during small group time...so who doesn't love scratch and sniff stickers?!   Remember these from when we were young?!

We LOVE these stickers!

I found these on Amazon!

(Click the picture to get the stickers on Amazon!)

My 'staches are OBSESSED with these movie scent markers from Mr. Sketch.  I mean...obsessed.  I have some of these in their supply baskets so our classroom always smells like nachos or popcorn.

I use these to make little circles on the back of their hands after guided reading!  It's a simple reward that they love!!  I have about 37 packages of these markers.  You know...just in case there is a world wide shortage...or a smelly marker zombie apocalypse...you can never be too prepared....just sayin!

I also keep my guided reading plans in a binder in my basket.  There handy.  And I love that I have these all in one place so I can refer back to them!

(Click on the picture to get your copy of my plans!)

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Bowling For Bunnies!

I know you're expecting Schedulin Sunday...but Mr. Greg is on spring break!!!!  WOOT WOOT!!!!!!!  And how have I been celebrating?!?!  By sleeping for 25 hours.  TRUE STORY!  12 hours on Friday night...3 hour nap on Saturday and 10 hours last night.  BAM!   I think my body finally said:  "ENOUGH!"   But now I feel re-energized and full of creative juices...so look out!

So, bunny bowling?!?!?!   True story.

Here's the deal...pickle.  (Get it?!  Dill pickle!!!  hahaha)  Last weekend I was blessed to spend the weekend with over 100 of my closest and most inspiring teacher friends at the Spring Teacher Blogger MeetUp in French Lick Indiana.  We had an amazing time.  I walked away inspired and in awe of the brilliant people I am fortunate enough to call friends.  And of course, I walked away with tons of new ideas.

This is one of those ideas!   Thanks to the Dollar Tree Kim Adsit for this idea for making 10 with Dollar Tree eggs, carrots or bunnies!

You need to 10 bunnies, eggs or carrots (Total cost $4 at the Dollar Tree), a ball ( I used a soft sand filled ball) and a recording sheet. Make sure to get the bunnies/eggs/carrots with feet so they stand up!

How does it work?   Students set up 10 bunnies (carrots or eggs) and bowl them over.  They record how many fell over and how many are standing.  And they make 10.  BAM!

My 'staches begged for this center last week.  It was a huge hit.  Super engaging and simple to set up!  And it meets Common Core standards!  See...Common Core is FUN!!!!

CCSS:  KNBT1  KOA1  KCC1  KCC2  KCC3 KCC4 KCC5

TIPS:  We set our bunnies up on a rug to keep the noise down and keep the bunnies from being massacred.  We also set them up against our stage (but a door or wall works) to keep them contained and prevent bunnies from fleeing the bunny massacre!

Click the pictures below to get your free recording sheets!  I made one with bunnies,  1 with carrots and 1 with eggs!

(These sheets can even be used with regular dice for addition practice!  BAM!  See that...free and multiple uses!  Work smarter not harder!  hehe)

Don't forget about my TPT Spring Break sale!  20% off my entire TPT store!

AND don't forget about the laminator give away on my Facebook page!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Test Tube Sight Words

$

Happy Day 1 of Spring Break to me!!!  Of course, the two doodles don't understand spring break so I was up at 7 a.m.  Thanks dogs!   But at least I can be productive!!!

So...it's the last two months of the school year...we're all looking for ways to keep our kiddos engaged and somewhat manageable.  You know...in between peeling them off the ceiling....so I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and activities to make learning fun.  I happened to come across this really awesome sight word wand idea at Heidi Songs!  (She's brilliant by the way....so make sure you're following her!)  Well, you know me....I'm always up for making something and doing new things.  I mean, what's the word that can happen?!   It could be an epic fail...and that's ok.  We learn from it.  We fix it and we move forward.   (A tantrum is ok too....if necessary...)

So...I'm a big Common Core standards supporter (standards....not testing...don't get me started...) So I am on a mission to show ways to make Common Core fun and developmentally appropriate.  #commoncoreisfun  #artiscommoncore    Seriously ya'll...don't the CC take your fun.   If you need help, just holla!

Anyways...back to my project...

Are ya ready for some TEST TUBE SIGHT WORDS?!?!?!?!?!?!    I know....right?!?!

These are going to be an epic hit in my classroom!

This project took me about 30 minutes to complete and cost me about $15.

You will need:

Test Tubes-click the link to get the tubes I used from Amazon.  The size matters.  You don't want your letter beads getting out of order.

Letter Beads-click the link to use the beads I used.  I went with colorful beads because I love colors.  The brighter the better.  (Tip:  Order 2 packages so you have enough letters.....just sayin.  Learn from me!)

Waterproof Glue-You know...because no 5 year old in my class would EVER open the lid and pour the water out.  Never.  Ever.

Glitter-everything is better with glitter.

Water

The first thing I did was determine which sight words to use.  Guess what I did?!?!  I used ....wait for it...DATA!  I went to my ESGI assessment and pulled our sight word data and used the words we missed the most.  BAM!  See...a fun, engaging activity using data.  #commoncoreisfun

Then you can start assembling your test tube sight words.

First, you want to spell out your word.   This makes putting it in the tube easier.

I put each word in the tube the same way.  The word reads from the top down.  So when you put the beads into the tube, put them in backwards.  Each tube is the same so they all read top down.

Next, add water.  Be sure to leave some space at the top for the lid.  And the air allows the glitter and beads to float more freely.

Then use the waterproof glue to seal the lid in the tube.  I used a paintbrush to keep it clean and neat.  I brushed a little glue around the top rim of the tube and then inserted the lid.

I used three different colors of glitter so really I could differentiate the activity based on glitter colors.  Also, this is a challenging activity so I wouldn't use it with students who haven't mastered sight words.  I would use it as a challenge for students who need a little more rigor with sight words.

And of course, there is a recording sheet!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Joy Cowley Classroom Giveaway

Happy spring break day 2!  I am super pumped to be sharing some awesome new books with you today and giving you the chance to win some books.  $1,000 in books for you classroom.  WHOA, right?!?!    I am teaming up with my friends at Hameray Publishing to give away a Mrs. Wishy Washy big book and you can enter the contest for the $1000 in books!  Keep reading...

First of all, who doesn't love Mrs. Wishy Washy?!   She is one of the favorites in my classroom year after year!    She's funny, she's energetic and she likes to clean.  Mrs. Wishy Washy and I are total opposites in that regard.  I'm not the cleaner of our family.  Sad but true.

Joy Cowley, the brains behind Mrs. Wishy Washy has a new collection of books, The Joy Cowley Collection, with lots of fun characters and great new stories.    Another thing that I love about this collection is that the books are great for punctuation, rhyming, opposites, comparing and contrasting and many other skills.

My favorite books in the new collection are the gruesome series.  Why?  Because the monsters will appeal to boys!!  It's so hard to find books to appeal to boys, so I love any books that will get my boys excited about reading.

I love the Mr. Tang series because of his different adventures which allows comparing and contrasting and allows students to make some text to self connections.

I love the Barbie (the sheep, not the plastic doll...) books because the main character is a lamb.  AWE!  A lamb who has lots of adventures!

So, who wants some books?

I am giving away one copy of the big book, Do Whacky Do!

Hameray Publishing is hosting the 2015 Joy Cowley Giveaway!    Someone will win $1000 in prizes including ninety leveled readers, nineteen big books, figure puppets and more!!!!

Click the picture to go to contest page and enter!  You have until March 31st!  GOOD LUCK!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Of EGG-CELLENT Addition!

People, I admit it.  I have a problem.

My name is Greg and I am a plastic egg hoarder.  Seriously.  I am finding them in my Jeep...in my classroom...in my office...they're everywhere.  And then I go to the store and buy more.  I just love them.  And want more.  Is that bad??  Is it bad to use them all year round??  Is it bad that I want to run to Wal-Mart right now and buy more?????  HELP YA'LL!

Anyways...I am putting those eggs to use.  (OK...SOME of the eggs...)
You know we're going to need some seriously hardcore engaging activities to keep the 'staches focused the last 2 months of school....so I'm hoping some egg centers will help.  But let's be honest...I'll be peeling them off of the ceiling from here on out...and I'm ok with that!

You need:
plastic eggs ($2 for 48 at WalMart)
egg trays (Wal-Mart $1)
labels (freebie included)
bucket (WalMart $1)

For my labels I used the small AVERY CLEAR EASY PEEL RETURN ADDRESS LABLES (#5667)  (Click the link to order from Amazon!)

You can download the printable PDF addition equations and answers by clicking the links!

(CCSS:  KOA1  KCC1  KCC2  KCC3  KCC4  KCC5)

Print the labels.

Put the equations on the eggs.
Place the answers on the egg trays.  I used 4 egg trays.

Put the eggs in a cute bucket.  AND BAM!  Adding to 10 center!   Hands on, engaging, fun!   Common Core math is fun!!

 #commoncoreisfun

Student's choose an egg, solve the equation and place the egg on the correct answer!

They can then record their answer on the recording sheet.

Add fun pens or markers or Scentos Sugar Rush Twisty Crayons for even more fun!

Here is a free recording sheet for ya!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard of Chick Subtraction

Hello.  It's me...the plastic egg hoarder again.  And I'm back with another fun math center using plastic eggs.  See...all of these eggs keep multiplying so I need to put them to use!!!!!

So....my class needs practice with subtraction so I made a little subtraction activity using these adorable chick eggs from...wait for it...THE DOLLAR TREE!!!!

These guys come 3 in a pack for $1.  BAM!  Super cheap fun!!

I also used these fun erasers from the Target dollar sport.  60 erasers for $1.  Can we say cheap???!!!

So, I decided that we would be subtracting chicks from carrots!

In each egg I put some carrots and chicks.  There are more carrots than chicks in each egg.  This keeps in consistent so we remember that the big number comes first.  (The recording sheet is set up like this too!)

Students grab an egg, open  the egg.  Count the carrots.  Write.  Count the chicks.  Write.  Subtract.

BAM!  Fun, engaging subtraction center!  AND CHEAP!

#commoncoreisfun

Throw the chicks in a cute bucket.  Add in the recording sheet and you're ready to meet common core math standards in a fun, hands on engaging way!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Plastic Eggs Math And Literacy Centers!

People, it's plastic egg week here at The Kindergarten Smorgasboard World Headquarters!    Seriously...It's been all about the plastic eggs!!

There are so many uses for these amazing teaching devices.   And they're SO cheap.     Seriously...will be using eggs all year!

Today I have two more centers (workstations/hippopotamuses) using our plastic eggs!

More fun, engaging, hands on activities with eggs and meeting Common Core Standards!

#commoncoreisfun

First up, sight words!

I labeled each half of an egg with the same sight word.  The 'staches will have to find the two
matching parts.  They will use the recording sheets to record their words.  To differentiate the center, they can either color the word or write the word.

(I am actually using this in my sensory bin.  I filled it with Easter basket grass and will put the egg pieces in the bin.  They will find the pieces and match them and record their answers!)

(Click the pictures to download your freebies!)

Next up...those tricky, pesky teen numbers!

There is something about those teen numbers that are just so hard for kiddos.  Maybe it's just "teen" anything...we all remember how hard our "teens."

On one half of the egg write a 1.  On the other half write 0-9.  This will make eggs for 10-20.

Students can make a teen number using any colors they want!  That's part of the fun!  The colors don't have to match!  Who wants to match anyway??  Matching is boring.  Have you seen my outfits?!  I'm all about the colors!

Students can use the recording sheet to color the ten frame to match the number or color the number!  (See....differentiation....)

(Click the picture to download your freebie!)

Make sure you check back here at 8:00 am central time on Sunday, March 29 for a HUGE announcement!

Well, spring break has come to an end.  No more lazy days of using my 35,678 plastic eggs to make new hippopatamuses (centers/workstations).   No more roaming around in my pajamas.   Yeah...pajamas.  I sleep in those.    No more trips to Sonic with the doodles.  But I'm super excited to get back to my little 'staches!  We have a CRAZY two months planned.  Countdowns...space unit...beach day...It's going to be epic!

So here is our short but busy (it's like me...short and always busy) three day week!

As always, feel free to download my lesson plans by clicking on the picture!

This week we are wrapping up our weather unit and celebrating a bunny who brings chocolate and eggs!!!!!!   EASTER!!!!

Our read alouds for the week!

We're going to wrap up our vowels this week with our magic E circle maps!

Here are some glittery circle map labels if you'd like them!

We will read The Cloud Book and learn four basic types of clouds.  Then we will make cloud people!

We will also write about what our cloud looks like and make a chart of all of the things a cloud can look like!  I love these types of brainstorming activities because it's just fun to see what the 'staches come up with!

In math, we are going to DIVE IN AND SUBTRACT with some BALLIN' SUBTRACTION!

Plastic pool?  Check.
Ball pit balls?  Check.

Super fun, super giggly, super engaing subtraction lesson?  CHECK AND CHECK!

I labeled the balls with subtraction equations to 10.

We "dive in" grab a ball, write and solve!!!

We do this whole group and during center time!  EPIC fun!!!!

#commoncoreisfun

We're also kicking off our addition and subtraction fluency timed tests.  We do 5 minutes with 25 problems for addition.  We do those for 2 weeks and then move down to 3 minutes for a week and the last week we do 1 minute.  I am always AMAZED at how much they increase their fluency by the end of the 1 minute week!!!   I also love that they have so much fun.  Last year, they begged for the tests each day!    We track our data with a data wall and with a graph!  They love seeing their growth!

After addition in April, we move to subtraction in May!

We will also be graphing jelly beans and graphing our BUNNY BITES!

Click the picture to get your free jelly bean graphing sheet!

I'm SUPER STOKED for this one.  I bought each 'stache a little chocolate bunny.  We're going to open the bunnies, take 1 bite from his ears, nose, front leg or his tail.  Then we're going to graph which place we bit first!

Click to get your freebie!  (Graph labels, name tags and a recording sheet!)

AND IT'S GLITTERY!!!

Meeting Common Core standards with a fun, engaging activity that involves eating chocolate!

*commoncoreisfun

We're also making Easter Chicks and of course, a hat1

The chick is a fun follow directions project.  We out 2 circles for the chick.  Then we cut an oval and cut it to look like an egg.  Add eyes, legs and a beak!  BAM!   Cute chicks to hang from the ceiling!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard 5 Tips To Organize Your Classroom Library

$
0
0

Howdy!  Today was a teacher work day so I spent the day prepping the room for the last two months of school.   I am super excited to be back with the 'staches tomorrow and really excited for what we have planned for the next 2 months!  Who's with me?!

So.....last night on the Kindergarten Smorgasboard Facebook page, I asked the question about organizing your classroom library.  There were tons of great answers...tons of ideas...and tips.  BUT....people...can you believe I've never done a blog post dedicated to my library?!?!   FOR SHAME!   Mr. Greg has been a bad boy.  But today we shall rectify this wrong.  Here are my 5 tips for organizing your classroom library.

1.  Space.

Your classroom library should be a major part of your classroom space.  It shouldn't be tucked away in that dark corner where pencils, glue lids and scissors go to die.   Incorporating the space into your classroom gives students visual clues to the importance of reading.

Make sure the space is open, well lit and inviting!

Our library sits in a corner of the classroom and is completely open to the entire space.  When the 'staches are sitting in the library, they can see everything happening in the classroom.  And, let's be honest, Mr. Greg can see what you're doing in the library!

2.  Organized Chaos.

You need a system to keep your library and all of those books organized.  This system needs to be user friendly for you AND the students.

I use a system that is so user friendly, that when other teachers ask to borrow a book or ask for books on a topic, I can tell them exactly which box to look in.  So, how does Mr. Greg do this?

It's as easy as 1.2.3....34.35.....44..45.

I USE NUMBERS!

Each box in my library is numbers.  I started at 1 and went until my boxes were numbered.

Every book that belongs in a box is numbered with the same number.  In the picture above, this is box 5.  All of the books in that box are numbered 5.
This makes returning books SUPER easy for me and for the 'staches.  (And it serves as constant number recognition practice!  WHAT WHAT math in the library?!!?!)

Our books are sorted in multiple ways:  author, theme/topic, genre.  There is no rule or checklist for how a book is sorted.  It's kind of just what my mind says at the moment!

3.  Containers.

If you're going to be organized and have a fantastic system in place, you need containers to contain the books.

I use a couple of different containers.  I'm not one of these teachers who needs the containers to match or be a pattern...I like a little spice in my life...a little variety!

I use plastic ice bins from Wal-mart.  They cost about $1.50 so they're cheap and they hold up well.

I also use the different colored tubs from Lakeshore (honestly...not a huge Lakeshore fan....but they had these bins on sale for buy 1 get 1 half off...so you know...i bought a few!)

I like the little punches of color they add in!

You also need good, strong shelves.  Mine were custom built by this organization here in Nashville called Nashville Tools For Schools!  They build classroom furniture cheap or free!  And it's great stuff!!

4.  Creature comforts!

Your library needs to be inviting!  It needs to be a place where your class wants to spend time reading and developing a love of reading!

Our library has a plastic swimming pool with pillows!!!!  TRUE STORY!   Best $9 ever spent!

Our rule is 2 people in the pool at a time.  I love glancing in the library and seeing my friends laid out in the pool reading books, sharing books and...wait for it...DISCUSSING BOOKS!!!!

I really think the relaxing nature of the pool helps them open up and talk about the books more.  And really...it's just plain fun!

We also have fish hats that we can wear while reading!  (They get washed with LiceShield shampoo monthly!  And Lysol-ed daily!)  They put these awesome hats on and read....and it just makes you smile!

We also have some stuffed animals and puppets we can use read to or read with!

5.  TRAINING!  TRAINING!  TRAINING!

You've put all of this time, energy and money into setting up your library.  You need to put in just as much time and engergy training your class how to use and take care of the library.

We spent an entire week (A WEEK PEOPLE!) modeling, training, practicing and repeating how to use the library.  Wet, lather, repeat.  Kind of like that...

We practice taking a box off the shelf.

We model how to take a book out of the box.

We model how to lay in the pool.

We model how to push the books to the side and carefully replace our book.

I pass out a book to each 'stache and we practice returning it to the right number.

We practice a lot.  But this helps the library stay organized and gives the students ownership.

And my final tip:

VARIETY!  The more books the better!  I'm currently up to 10,000 books.  This variety makes sure every child can find books they enjoy.  And when we are in the library, it's free choice.  They can get any book and read!   I want the classroom library to be a place of fun and joy and a place where my 'staches develop a love of reading!!

Here's a fun view of our library from my NEW GOPRO camera!!!!!!!!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard GoPro Video: Morning Meeting

It has finally happened!!!  Mr. Greg got a GoPro camera!

So, what's a GoPro you ask?  It's the little camera that you see mounted on drones and cars and bicycles and now...kindergarteners!

I bought my GoPro at Amazon!  (Click the picture to see for your self!)

So today, I strapped the GoPro onto my pal DogPound for our morning meeting.   When I asked him mom if it were ok, she said was a little scared for ME!  DogPound says:  "Oh, whatever.  Now I get to be the videographer!"

It is quite eye opening to see your teaching from the true perspective of your students!!

Now, remember...a 5 year old is wearing the camera...so hold on tight!

Also, turn your volume up.  The sound is low.  I'm still figuring this out...

So, today was our first day back from our spring break.  This is our normal morning meeting routine, so this is what a "typical" morning meeting looks like for us!   Because typical and kindergarten totally go together!

What do you think?  How would you like to see me use the GoPro in my classroom?  Leave me a comment and share your ideas!!!

Teacher tip #82719 to increase engagement and excitement:  CHOCOLATE!!!

Seriously...when we figured out we needed CHOCOLATE BUNNIES for today's graphing activity...it was on.  The 'staches couldn't contain themselves.

Each stache got a chocolate bunny.  I found them at WalMart for $1 each.  They also have 3 packs of smaller bunnies for $1.

Next, we took one bite.  We could bite his ears, nose, tail (butt as we giggled...) or leg.

After we took one bite, we graphed our results on our class graph.

Surprisingly, the ear was bit off the most!

And finally, we analyzed our data and completed our own graphs!

Epic fun.  Math.  Common core.  Chocolate.  Did I mention chocolate?!

Howdy ya'll!  I am super excited to be linking up with Lucky Little Learners and Schroeders Shenanigans In 2nd for their awesome new linky party 2togetherwearebetter!

People, teaching is hard.  And it can be very isolating.  That's why we have to stick together and build each other up and share ideas.  We are better together!!  We need each other.  We need to share ideas...we need to pick each other's brains....and we need to support and care for one another!!!   We're all in this together with one goal:  to give our students the very best education possible and be the best darn teacher we can be!!!

(The more glitter you use...the better....just sayin...hehe)

I am excited that this first edition of the 2getherwearebetter linky is schedules.  I get asked about my day all of the time.   So, I figured I would record a little video to walk you through our day!

First things first... I hope the Easter bunny was good to you and left you lots of chocolate!  If he left too much chocolate, you can send it my way!!

HAPPY EASTER!!!

And now...a shortened, holiday version of Schedulin Sunday!

We're kicking off plants this week and working on skip counting!  We've been counting by 5 and 10 during our calendar routine for months, so we've got the counting thing down...BUT this week we're going to apply that skill with some fun activities and projects...
As always, my weekly plans are available by clicking on the picture!

This week we're introducing -ing words and working with adjectives.  Last week we did an awesome (GLITTERY) adjective lesson (Blog post coming tomorrow) where we introduced adjectives and used adjectives to describe each other.  This week we're going to use adjectives to describe Mr. GREG....and then we're going to work on jazzing up our writing with adjectives!

Some of our plant activities this week include:

Planting seeds (DUH), carnations in food coloring to see how water travels through plants, labeling the parts of a plant, panting flowers and lots of plant research and writing!

We will be using my Plantin' Seeds Research Project creation for our plant unit.

I love this sponge painting activity!  Just cut some sponges in the shape of petals.  And paint!!!!  Super cute, super easy and low mess.  Although we know how much I love to make a mess!

For Foodie Fun Friday, we read one of my favorite books, Tops And Bottoms and then we have a tops and bottoms salad!!!

Ingredients:  lettuce, carrots, beets, radishes, broccoli, and celery!  (And I even give them ranch!)

We sort the foods by top or bottom (where they grow) and then we make our salad and chow down!  YUMMY!!!

In math, we're skip counting!

Monday we're going to use our FEET to make a class chart for counting to 100 by tens.  Each 'stache will stamp their feet on the chart and label it (10, 20....100).  Then I'll laminate the chart and display it!

Tuesday, we're doing something similar.  Each stache will get some feet to color.  They will cut them out and glue them on their paper to count by 10 to 100!

Wednesday and Thursday are the same activities...but counting by 5.
We will use our handprints instead of feet!

Click the picture to get your free skip counting cut outs!

We're also continuing our addition fluency tests.  30 problems.  3 minutes.  Love seeing their growth!!

As always, a poem and emergent reader for ya!

A Kindergarten Smorgasboard of Center Storage!

It's a rainy Monday here in Music City.  Blah!!   But at least I got to wear my fun rain boots for dismissal!

The questions I get asked the most:

Do you really have 13 kids in your class?  (YES!)

How is the no tables and no desks working out?   (AMAZING!!!)

And...how do you store all of your centers and stuff?

So today I am answering the question about my centers and my stuff.

I use RubberMaid containers and Zip-Lock bags!

I love these boxes for a few reasons:

I can see through them.
The lids snap on and they stack nicely.  (Mine are all stacked on top of our cabinets!)
I can put even bulky centers in them!

(Don't judge me...the boxes aren't labeled.  It's on my project list...)

I sort my centers by SKILL and not theme or holiday.
Why skill you ask??  Well,  when I need a center for a certain skill, I can just go to the box for that skill and pull something.  For me, it's a lot easier than digging through December/Christmas stuff looking for addition centers.

So...how do you sort your centers?  What are the categories?

Letters
Sounds
CVC Words
Vowels and CVC-E words
Sight Words
QR Codes
Writing and Sentences
Addition
Subtraction
Numbers
Counting
Place Value
Graphing
Ten Frames
Shapes

For some categories, there are multiple boxes.  What I do then is to try to keep it somewhat organized by theme/month.  So one CVC word box contains CVC centers for the first 9 weeks.  Does that make sense?

Each individual center is stored in zip-lock bags.  I use the gallon size bags with the red slider on top.  The gallon size is perfect for holding the pieces AND recording sheets.  Everything it zipped up nice and neat so when I pull a center from the box, it's ready to go.  I keep all of the extra recording sheets in the bags when I put the center away so when I pull it out next year, it's ready to go.

For centers with no recording sheet, I use the quart size bags!

The slider is the trick.  They 'staches can easily zip them open and closed.  And yes, this is a procedure we practice.  At the beginning of the year, I model how to zip and unzip.  I model what happens if we do it too hard.  And we practice.  We pass the bags around and practice zipping it open and close!

Here's what the inside looks like.   Everything lays mostly flat.  The bags are all zipped so I can dig through and grab what we need!

BAM!  Easy...manageable....teacher friendly center storage!

PS   I do have overflow storage at home.  It's where I store extra center supplies like extra holiday boxes/bags, eggs, containers etc.  I use the large containers with the flip open lids and stack them in the garage!
